My Pre-Market Routine: The 20 Minutes That Changed My Trading
For the first six months of trading, my mornings looked like this: wake up at 9:28, scramble to my desk, see what's moving, and start clicking buttons. My P&L reflected that chaos.
Then I built a 20-minute pre-market routine. Within two weeks, my results started to change. Here's exactly what I do.
6:00 AM — Check Overnight Futures (2 min)
Before anything else, I check S&P futures to gauge the overall market direction. If futures are down big, I know it's going to be a risk-off day and I adjust my bias accordingly.
6:05 AM — Scan for Gappers (5 min)
I run a scan for stocks gapping up or down more than 3% on above-average volume. These are where the biggest moves will happen. I note the top 3-5 names on my watchlist.
6:10 AM — Check Economic Calendar (2 min)
FOMC? Jobs report? CPI? If there's a major release, I know to expect volatility and I'll either reduce my size or wait for the dust to settle.
6:12 AM — Review Key Levels (5 min)
For each stock on my watchlist, I mark the key support and resistance levels on the 15-minute chart. I also note the pre-market high and low — these often act as magnets in the first hour.
6:17 AM — Set Alerts and Write the Plan (3 min)
I write down exactly what I'm looking for. "If NVDA breaks above $890 with volume, I'll go long with a stop at $882." If the setup doesn't trigger, I don't trade. This is the most important part — it removes impulsive decisions.
6:20 AM — Mental Reset (3 min)
I take three deep breaths and remind myself of one rule: "Follow the plan." Whatever happened yesterday doesn't matter. Today is a clean slate.
The Result
Since implementing this routine, my average daily P&L went from -$45 to +$180. Not because I became a better chart reader, but because I stopped making dumb decisions. The routine forces preparation, and preparation breeds confidence.
Try it for two weeks. You'll never go back to winging it.
